Why become an artist?

When thinking about this post I thought that it would have a very easy and simple answer. But as I started thinking, it was more complicated than I thought. To be honest, I do not think that I ever did become an artist. I never made myself an artist. I just am.

I am not sure if what I am saying makes sense. I did not become an artist because I was always one. One cannot become something that they already are. For me, being an artist is part of who I am. There was never a time when I thought to myself "I want to be an artist". If anything, I said, "I want to draw as a living".

If memory serves me right, I always had a creative mind. I like to know how things work and I like to recreate things as well. I remember making my kites with paper or plastic bags. I remember making my cardboard ramps for my Tech Deck Fingerboards.

Creativity is what I do. And my real goal as an artist is to create things that no one has ever seen. Things that no one has ever imagined. To bring a different world to life. This might sound tacky and all but that is the mission I chose for myself. For some reason I find every day objects boring. I could never sit and draw a bowl of fruit. Yet I have spent hours drawing a colorful rhinoceros or a futuristic aquatic scene.

As far as work, there are a lot of things to work on as an artist. No matter how talented someone is, they will not know everything. I had to go to school and put in the time and work to improve my skills. Taking classes such as color theory and anatomy helps to create better artwork. At times I was just painting different color pallets for weeks just to understand how different colors look with each other.

Becoming an artist is something that I am really passionate about. If I was not, I would not be writing this blog. Nor would I be drawing in my spare time. As I said before, it takes a lot of time to improve and take it to the next level. And that's where I want to be. And once I make it there, I will keep on working to level up once again.
